- Annotation: ‟On the Stumps (The Story of a Former Man)” was written by Ivan Shmelyov in 1924 in Landes of France. In the article, for the first time, with the help of the dacha topos in this story, the transformation of professor’s dacha has been traced, which turned from a corner of paradise into a hell of memories. These changes confirm the legitimacy of the interpretation of the dacha/estate topos as a lost paradise and the extraordinary productivity of its use in the analysis of a work of art. The author of the article analyses in detail the ‟dacha” chapter of the story, shows the important chronology of its construction. Particular attention in the work is paid to the divine principle and its embodiment in the short story, opposition and comparison of the Motherland and foreign land. The views of researchers on the plot decisions and figures of this short story are noted, the innovation of the interpretation of the work using the estate and country themes is noted.
