Annotation: Period of 1682-1696 in the history of Russia is known as a period of “two tsarsˮ, since Moscow throne at that time was occupied by two tsars at once, half-brothers Ivan and Peter, sons of Tsar Alexis. The personality and entourage of the younger tsar, the future first Russian emperor known as Peter the Great, have been studied in detail in historiography. Meanwhile, historians bypass the elder brother, sickly and far from state affairs. However, it does not mean at all that the people surrounding Ivan Alekseyevich did not play any role in governing the country during that period. The article has been presented for the first time a special study in historiography, devoted to research of the environment of Tsar Ivan Alekseyevich and determining the role of specific persons close to the sovereign in the political struggle in Russia in the period 1682–1689. The article examines the family and service ties of the entourage of the “elder tsarˮ, special attention is paid to informal relations, which often played a decisive role in choosing a political orientation in the context of the struggle for power.
Keywords: Ivan V, Peter I, history of Russia, 17th century, tsarevna Sophia, political history, struggle for power, Russian tsars.
