- Annotation: In the globalisation age, it is necessary to define one’s national identity. For the English, this is especially topical, for it turned out that the concept “Englishness” is “dissolved” in a multicultural environment. The article deals with Jane Austen’s understanding of “Englishness”. In her novels, written in the genre of “country house novel», the house and its surroundings are closely connected with the concept of “home” – one of the main concepts in the English national conceptual sphere of “Englishness”. We can say that these novels influenced the subsequent perception of “Englishness” in English fiction. This explains the topicality of the study. The article proves that Jane Austen’s understanding of “Englishness” includes not only the country house, but is also associated with such concepts as patriotism, marriage and the Tory.
