- Annotation: In the article, based on the study of the memoirs of Valentin Bulgakov, Nikolay Gusev and Alexander B. Goldenweiser, letters and diaries of Leo Tolstoy during the last two years of his life in Yasnaya Polyana, the features of the estate life and life of the writer, his preferences, relationships with family, visitors, and peasants are analysed. It is shown that estate life, its content, rhythm were determined precisely by Leo Tolstoy with this happening behind the scenes, so that Yasnaya Polyana without Leo Tolstoy was not that unique estate in which everything was subject to well-coordinated spiritual work, thoughts about the necessary transformation. The nature of Leo Tolstoy’s work with young secretaries and assistants, the closeness of convictions, which allowed Nilolay Gusev and Valentin Bulgakov not only to convey Leo Tolstoy’s main thoughts for correspondents, but also to perceive the mood and state of the writer, are assessed. The significant influence of the writer on the life and fate of his entourage is stated.
